Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the CalyHealth weight loss program, GLP-1 medications, and what to expect.

What happens after I complete the eligibility quiz?

If you are eligible to participate in the CalyHealth program, you will have the option to schedule a prescription fill with a video visit or, depending on the state, schedule a prescription fill without a video visit. Once you select your prescription fill type, you will be asked to sign up for one of our monthly subscription services. Once paid, you will be prompted to create a password for your account. Note: your username is the email address you signed up with. After creating your password, the next step is to complete your initial health history intake form. You can access it directly after signup or later through the portal. During your first appointment, your provider will discuss your health goals, review your medical history, order any necessary lab tests, and may prescribe medication if appropriate. After starting a weight loss medication, regular follow-up visits may be scheduled — typically once a month at the beginning. Your provider will monitor your progress, medication tolerance, lab tests, and adjust treatment as needed.

Who qualifies for weight loss medications?

While prescriptions for weight loss medication cannot be guaranteed, individuals 18 years or older who meet criteria such as BMI and certain associated health conditions may qualify. Generally, eligible patients include individuals with overweight (BMI > 25) or patients seeking maintenance therapy who have a BMI > 22 and, if their current BMI < 27, have a history of obesity or overweight and were previously on a GLP-1 within the past 12 months.

How old do I have to be to participate in the CalyHealth program?

At this time, patients must be at least 18 years old to participate in the program.

What is the cost of the weight loss program?

CalyHealth offers multiple subscription types, all of which include comprehensive coaching and services with no hidden fees, membership costs, or lab charges. Your care team will help determine the most affordable medication based on your insurance. GLP-1 prescriptions are often more cost-effective when covered by insurance. For uninsured or underinsured patients, your provider may help find discount options or more affordable alternatives.

What happens if my BMI falls below 25?

If your BMI drops below 25, your insurance may no longer cover GLP-1 medications. Your provider will reassess whether continuing medication is clinically appropriate. Some patients may still qualify for maintenance therapy depending on their clinical history and symptoms.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, insurance does not cover virtual visits for our program.

What type of provider will I see during my visits?

Our team consists of licensed clinicians and nurse practitioners who can prescribe medications, order labs, review symptoms, and create personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs.

Do you offer maintenance therapy?

Yes, maintenance therapy is offered for most patients. The primary exception is for individuals with BMI < 22, as this population is safer to treat in an in-person clinical setting rather than virtually. To qualify for maintenance therapy, a patient must have a prior diagnosis of obesity (BMI > 30) or overweight (BMI > 27) and must have used a GLP-1 medication within the past 12 months.

Who should avoid taking a GLP-1 medication for weight loss?

You may not be eligible for GLP-1 therapy if any of the following apply to you: (1) Pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant; (2) End-stage kidney disease; (3) Severe liver disease; (4) Active or past eating disorder; (5) Current suicidal thoughts or prior suicide attempt; (6) Active cancer treatment; (7) History of pancreatitis; (8) Organ transplant on anti-rejection medication; (9) Severe GI conditions (gastroparesis, IBD); (10) Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. Please consult your clinician for a full assessment.

What comes with my subscription?

Your monthly subscription includes: monthly clinician visits with personalized support and guidance; help with prior authorizations to navigate insurance for GLP-1 medications; weekly group coaching covering nutrition, mindset, and movement; comprehensive lab testing fully included through Quest Diagnostics; 1:1 nutritionist support with personalized dietary coaching plus chat access; and care coaching with bi-weekly support from a Certified Medical Assistant to help with planning and accountability.

Do I need lab work before starting the program?

No. During your initial visit, your provider will review your health history and order any necessary labs. These may include CMP, hemoglobin A1C, TSH, and a lipid panel. If you have recent labs (within 24 months), you may not need new labs. You may upload your existing labs in the portal or email them to support@rx.calyhealth.com.

Do you help with prior authorizations?

Yes. Our team helps navigate prior authorizations for medications, including GLP-1 drugs. We assist throughout the entire process to ensure you get access to the prescribed medications.

Where can I get my lab tests done?

You may complete labs at any Quest Diagnostics location at no additional cost. Alternatively, you may upload prior labs or email them to support@rx.calyhealth.com for your provider to review. If you do not live near Quest, your provider can order a general lab requisition, though completing labs at your primary care office is often more cost-effective.

Will my information be confidential and private?

Yes. Our services adhere to HIPAA-compliant security and privacy standards to ensure your personal information remains confidential.

What is the cost of lab testing?

Lab testing completed at Quest Diagnostics is fully included in your subscription. Costs may vary if you choose to use insurance or pay out-of-pocket at other facilities. Please contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
