Common questions

What treatment options are available?

Options include systemic hormone therapy (patch, cream or tablet), local vaginal estrogen, non-hormonal medication such as paroxetine, and progesterone when needed to protect the uterine lining. Your clinician recommends the right fit.

Who is eligible for hormone therapy?

Systemic HRT is generally offered to women under 60 (or within 10 years of menopause) with bothersome symptoms and no contraindications such as breast cancer, heart attack, stroke or blood clots.

How long until I feel better?

Vaginal estrogen often works in 2–6 weeks. Systemic estrogen and progesterone for hot flashes, sleep and mood usually take 4–8 weeks.

Do I still need mammograms and Pap smears?

Yes. Routine age-appropriate cancer screenings remain essential while on hormone therapy.
